POST SEPT 30TH TOURNAMENT INTERVIEW by Mick Chanthaseth
MC: Overall, what did you think about the tournament? NP: I thought it was a very organized and the tournament ran very smoothly. Tracy Hess and Antonio Mckee did a good job.
MC: What did you do to prepare yourself for this tournament? NP: I didn’t really do anything special for this tournament. I just trained jiu jitsu how I usually train.
MC: How do you usually train jiu jitsu? NP: Well before, my main focus was jiu jitsu and I use to train twice a day, six days a week, purely jiu jitsu but now my main focus is mixed-martial arts; therefore, I don’t get to train jiu jitsu as much as I use to. I have to divide my time between boxing, jiu jitsu, wrestling, muay thai, and mixed-martial arts training.
MC: How do you compare a jiu jitsu tournament to your mixed-martial arts fight? NP: Well, mixed-martial art is now my main goal in life. To prepare myself, I train extremely hard for each fight, and each fight I go for the kill. My intentions in mixed-martial arts fight is to always have non-stop action, and keep pushing the pressure on my opponents. As for a jiu jitsu match or a jiu jitsu tournament, I do not take them as seriously. I just look at them as practice to improve my jiu jitsu game. I think that was the reason why I did not do so well in this last competition.
MC: Nam Phan lost? What happened!? NP: I have not competed in a jiu jitsu match or competition in quite a while or a few years, so I forgot how it was like to compete against a jiu jitsu player. I felt that this was a good learning experience for me, I felt that I didn’t have any fire as I usually do in my competitions so my mind set from now on will be to go for the kill in every competition I do, but at the same time remember to always have fun.
MC: Why did you decide to do this tournament after being away for so long? NP: Like I said, I was just trying to do jiu jitsu tournaments for fun and I figured the more jiu jitsu or grappling competitions I do will only help me in the long run. My mindset is that if I do pretty well against a pure grappler in a grappling match, maybe I’ll do well against a pure grappler in a mixed martial arts fight. Also, same thing goes for my reasoning for professional boxing. If I can do well against a pure striker in a purely stand up match, maybe I’ll do pretty well against a pure striker in a mixed martial arts fight, so I figure the more amateur tournaments I do can only better my career for the cage.
MC: When do you think you’ll do another jiu jitsu tournament? NP: The sooner, the better I hope. I just want to keep busy and compete against good grapplers so they can just beat me up and I can learn from then. I hear that there is a tournament sometime in November.
MC: Thanks for your time Nam. NP: No Problem, always a pleasure. See you later alligator! Hahaha.
MC: See you in a while crocodile!

Nam Phan with teammates and friends at INHOUSE TOURNAMENT 09.30.06

Nam Phan earns second place in the 180 lb. weight class at Tracy Hess's Inhouse Tournament.
Phan arrives to Cerritos Body Shop Fitness and signs up for the professional division (4yrs. plus experience) and weighs in at 165 lbs, that would place Phan in the 160-169 lbs weight class. Moments later Phan was notified that there were not enough competitors in his weight class/ division and was asked to compete in the intermediate division at a weight class ranged from 170-180 lbs. Phan agreed with the new circumstances and carried on with the tournament
Round 1:
Phan competed against opponent1. They started off with a clinch; Phan quickly pulls guard and began executing his submissions. Phan eventually achieves an omaplatta swip and receives two points and gets in side control. Opponent1 was able to achieve a half guard then Phan began to work for a DB Darce choke. Opponent1 successfully defends, escapes the submission and Phan takes his back with the "J-Dub" technique which earned him four points for putting the hooks in. The round ends with Phan winning the match with 6-0.
Round 2 / Finals:
In the Finals, Phan meets with JJ Ambrose who beat Phan's teammate Josh Smith, in the previous round. The round began with the two in a clinch, Phan goes for a shot which was defended with a front head lock by Ambrose. Phan sits out trying to take the back, but Ambrose pulled out and ended up in Phan's closed guard. Phan immediately began working for swips and submission, but Ambrose defended and kept Phan in position. Phan was able to finish an omaplatta swip, but Ambrose quickly recovered and rushed Phan into the near by cage. The referee stopped the match and repositioned the two in the center with Ambrose on Phan's leg as if they were on a single leg take down. Ambrose pushed on and recieved three points for passing Phan's guard. Ambrose stayed stationary keeping Phan tight making sure he did not escape. Phan recovered an open guard and successfully passed again by Ambrose receiving another three points for the pass. The two were again at a stale position with Phan on bottom and Ambrose on Phan's side control. Phan eventually squirms his way out of the bottom position and the two started again, on their feet. Only 15 seconds left of the four-minute round, Phan attempts a shot, but was unsuccessful. The finals ended with Ambrose being the champion of the 180-170 weight class and intermediate division and Phan earning second place. 6-0.
