NP: Hello Mick, I'm doing well. Thanks for asking.
MC: So, you have a fight coming up?
NP: Yes. That's correct. This Saturday. September 9th 2006 at the cow palace in San Francisco against Aric nelson
MC: That's kind of far. Do you think any fans will make it?
NP: I'm sure I have a strong support from San Jose to come and support me, but i don tthink that anyone from the oc will come out to support me
MC: Is this a cage fight or a ring fight?
NP: I am not certain, but i'm pretty sure this is going to be in a standard cage.
MC: “Malice at the Palace”, Is this a new event?
NP: Yes. This is a new even by full contact promotions. This Saturday September 9th is their debut mixed martial arts event. I'm very excited to be fighting for them. They've been treating me very well.
MC: How do you mean they've been treating you well?
NP: Everyone from the promotion has been showing me a lot of respect and they are very nice. They even flew me up to San Jose to go hang out at a Club to hang out at Saturday September 9 th . Pretty much they've been showing me that they appreciate me fighting at the promotion.
MC: Oh. That was the Tiki Bar right?
NP: Yes. That is correct, that is the famous Tiki Bar in San Jose . I signed autographs till my Sharpie ran out of ink.
MC: That's quite a bit of autographs. How's your hand?
NP: Ha-ha. No, actually I didn't sign any autographs; I don't think anyone knew who the heck I was, to be honest.
MC: If I wanted tickets, where would I be able to get them?
NP: I think you can get them through Ticketmaster or call directly to the promotion and they will take care of your ticket situations.
MC: Since I kind of know you, can I get any hookups from you?
NP: Well, you know Mick. I always take care of the people that are closest to me when it comes to tickets sales, but I am not doing ticket sales for this event.
MC: Well, aside from that. Are you prepared?
NP: Um no. Just kidding. Yes I'm very prepared. Coach Jeremy Williams has been prepping me up in jui jitsu and mma very well, and coach art James, my boxing coach, has brought my hands to a whole new level.
MC: How have you been preparing?
NP: Well I haven't been doing anything special for the fight, you know. I still train 6 days a week, twice a day, but maybe except that Coach Jeremy has really been teaching me a lot of muy thai techniques to add to my arsenal of weapons. I try to learn as much different techniques as i can so i have all sorts of offense and defenses in the ring against my opponent.
MC: So, Hows your diet? I've heard you eat lots of junk food. How does that affect your training?
NP: Yes Mick. I'm very notorious for eating pop eyes chicken and Tommy's chili fries before my fight, but believe it or not I've been trying to eat healthier because I notice how the grease in my body affects my performance during practice. so I've been trying to eat healthy so I don't feel nauseous during my fights.
MC: Do you have any new techniques or styles that us, the audience, is going to see in the next fight?
NP: muhahahha. Yes Mick, Jeremy, the Apex Team, and I have been developing a new technique for this fight, but I cannot reveal it to the public yet. Everyone has to wait till the fight. Hopefully I can pull it off. Until then everyone has to wait and see.
MC: How much do you know of your opponent?
NP: I really don't know much of my opponent but I know he's 5-10 and he's a really good kick boxer.I have to watch for his reach, because that's where I think he's going to be strong at.
MC: So you haven't really been studying your opponent?
NP: I always try to look for footage for my fights but unfortunately there wasn't any footage of Aric available.
MC: So you think you're going to win? And don't be so humble.
NP: Well Mick, i would really like to think or say that I am going to win this fight, but in a fight you never know what's going to happen, but I just hope that I put up a good performance and make everyone proud.
MC: Well, thanks for the interview. Good luck this Saturday.
NP: Thanks Mick always a pleasure.

Nam Phan and Ryan Diaz ( Pictures ) put on a striking display for the folks in attendance, with Diaz doing his best work in the opening period. He continuously beat Pham to the punch, kick and knee. The only effective offense Phan generated in the opening frame came after Diaz slipped to the mat and he was able to attack the now defensive Diaz.
The second round began well for Diaz, who landed a solid left hook that opened a small cut over Phan's right eye. Sadly, for Diaz, that was about the only offense he could muster during the second. Phan — who recently won his pro debut as a boxer by knockout — showed off his newfound skills by repeatedly digging to Diaz's body with powerful hooks and finishing his combinations with punches and elbows to the head that eventually opened up a healthy cut on Diaz' forehead.
Diaz seemed to have had enough of the multitudes of combinations being directed his way and shot in for a takedown. Phan sprawled back against the cage and threw a borderline knee. Referee Cecil Peoples immediately broke the fighters and called for the ringside physician.
The referee later informed Sherdog.com that he had given Phan a warning for the knee, stating that from his vantage point it looked like Diaz knee was on the mat when the strike landed. The doctor, after examining the cut, allowed the match to continue.
Phan went back to his effective body punching strategy for the remaining minutes of the match. The final bell sounded leaving both fighters looking much worse for the wear. As the announcer blared out an announcement for “split decision draw” the pro-Phan crowd launched into a chorus of boos.
After the next fight Phan was brought back into the cage and KOTC officials announced that there had been an error in tallying the scores and Phan was announced the winner by majority decision.
