Post Fight Boxing Match Interview 08/17/07

Joey Santana: Nam!! First off, congratulations on your win!!!

Nam Phan : Thank you very much Joey

JS:Nam I could not make it to your fight, and I am sure a lot of your fans
could not either. Would you mind talking us through what happened?

NP: Yeah, pretty much first round I just tried to do a lot of boxing and
focus on body shots. Second round I gave the guy two eight counts with two
left hooks to the body and then i dropped him a third time with a right to
the body.

JS: You love those body shots, huh?
How did you feel going into your fight? How do you feel now?

NP: Yeah every fight I go into, I try to stay as calm as I can. I feel
pretty good right now after fight, I have no serious injuries.

JS: Glad to hear your healthy. Are you going to rest up this coming week? I
hear you have an MMA match coming up soon, could you tell us anything about
it?

NP: No, i am just gonna rest up for the weekend and then back to regular
training Monday. Yeah I have some MMA fights lined up: One on the 29th of
Sept and one week later on Oct 6th. On Sept 29th I will be fighting for
Strikeforce at the Playboy Mansion against Billy Evangelista and on Oct 6th
is going at the Anaheim Convention Center against Brian Bixler.

JS: Wow, your fighting at the Playboy Mansion?? You must be excited! What do
you know about your opponent, Billy Evangelista?

NP: Well yeah of course I am excited to be fighting at the Playboy Mansion.
How many people can say that they got to fight at the Playboy Mansion. As
for Billy all I know that he is a really tough guy and he has great kick
boxing.

JS: Th Playboy Mansion, ever mans dream! Slightly off topic, Nam. Randy vs
Gonzaga, and GSP vs Josh Koshcheck next weekend... what are your predictions
for these two fights?

NP: Oh man, I think Gonzaga might knock out Randy and I think GSP will
finish Koshcheck.

JS: I agree with both your picks. Its hard to count Randy out, though.
Anyway, Nam, have you ever considered joining a fight team? I know a lot of
fighters train with each other at the same gym/team: Militech, Team Quest,
ect...

NP: No, I believe in the team that I have right now. I have great people to
train and work with, such as Rick Estrada and Russ Muira to help me train in
jiu jitsu, Adam Lynn helps me work my strategy for MMA, Art James gets my
hands ready for boxing, and I just got Fumi Fujimoto from Japan to help me
out in Muai Thai.

JS: Sounds like you have a great group of guys helping you out, Nam.
Speaking of strategy, how important is strategy in an MMA match? We have
seen many many upsets this year in the sport. Are those really upsets if the
winner had a great strategy and used it to his advantage?

NP: Well, I don't know if I would call having a game plan that didn't follow
through an upset. Sometimes a fighter might have the perfect game plan for
an opponent, but maybe the other guy had a better game plan or it just
wasn't the fighters day to win.

JS: So going into each of your matches I assume you have a strategy worked
on. Is that the same for your boxing matches?

NP: Yes it is, depending on how short or tall, passive or aggressive, or
whatever it may be. I try to come up with a solid game that is appropriate
for the situation that i am in.

JS: Do you plan on boxing any time soon again?

NP: Yeah, I plan on competing in a boxing match at least twice a year and
the rest of the year spread between MMA and submission tournaments.

JS: What can we expect from Nam Phan in the future?

NP: I think the MMA fans can expect for me to do my best and try to give a
great performance in the ring. That is all I can say

JS: I really like watching you fight not only because your my buddy, but
because I know your going to put on a great match. Theres no quit in Nam....
thats what I think. Well, Nam thank you for your time. Would you like to
thank anybody?

NP: Yeah i would like to thank my boxing coaches Art James and Dennis
Gonzales, my team from Subfighter Rick Estrada , Russ Muira, Adam Lynn and
Dino. My sponsors Budovideos.com, Tapout, and Toe 2 Toe.

Nam Phan Pre Fight Boxing Interview

Joey Santana: Hey Nam! How have you been since your last fight?

Nam Phan: Hey there Joey, everything so far has been pretty good.

JS:I hear you have an upcoming boxing match later this month? What do you
know about your opponent?

NP:I actually don't know much about my opponent, except that he's about my
height and his record is 1-1.

JS:How do you train for your boxing matches? Do you train more for boxing
and less on your MMA? Do you feel that helps your overall MMA game or does
it slow you down a bit?

NP: I actually train pretty much the same way whether I have a boxing match,
MMA match, or a submission match to do. My schedule doesn't change all that
much.
I also feel that the more I compete, the more experience I will get and that
will only improve me as a fighter.

JS: I was wondering, if your boxing career has just begun to flourish, and
the income is better than MMA, would you ever consider becoming a pro boxer?

NP: I actually get this question asked a lot and I would like everyone to
know that I only compete in boxing matches just to improve my MMA game. Even
if the money is good, I don't see myself going all the way with boxing just
because my heart is not into the sport. My love and passion is for Mixed
Martial Arts.

JS: That's awesome to hear, Nam. You're one of my favorite fighters not only
because your a great guy, but because of your passion for MMA. anyway, next
question: What are some differences between the stand up in an MMA match,
and the stand up in a boxing match?

NP: I think that in a boxing match, even the glove is heavier in ounces. A
boxer's punch is more clean and crisp. In MMA, a fighter does not always
focus 100 percent on striking and a lot of the times the punch is not as
strong as it could be with better technique. Also, the gloves of a MMA
fighter are lighter in ounces.

JS: How about the crowds? Is there a big differance between fighting in
front of an MMA crowd, and fighting in front of a boxing crowd?

NP: No, not really I feel that the crowds are no different from a boxing
ground to a MMA crowd.

JS:Do you ever get MMA tendencies during a boxing match, and want to shoot
or anything like that?

NP: Hahaha. No, I'm very discipline. I don't ever get the urge to do that.

JS:How is your diet? Eating healthy?

NP:I think my diet as of now is pretty good. I am trying very hard to stay
away from all the fatty foods.

JS:It's hard to avoid the fatty foods when you live in So Cal, huh?

NP: Yes, there are a lot of temptations, but I try my best to stay away.

JS:Do you cut a lot of weight for boxing (and MMA?)

NP: No , I don't cut that much because I'm not that big of a guy to begin
with.

JS:Which of the two sport would you say require more endurance, boxing or
MMA?

NP: I think that both, boxing and MMA require about the same amount of
endurance.

JS:Who are some of your favorite boxers?

NP:Again, I'm not so into boxing, I just compete in it to get more
experience. But, if I had to choose, I would pick Muhammad Ali.

JS:Thanks for your time, Nam. Good luck!!! And, any shout outs??

NP: Yeah, I just want to give a shout out to everyone that has always
supported me. My sponsors Budovideos.com, Kaizen Athletics, Tapout,
Subfighter.com, and Knoxx gear.
