Post Fight K1 interview

Mick Chanthaseth: How does it feel to be on the other side of a 30 second fight?
Nam Phan: Good question Mick. I feel very embarrassed because I did not get to show what I can really do.

MC: What did you think of the fight?
NP: I thought my fight was going pretty good until the referee stopped it way too early.

MC: If he hadn’t stopped it, what do you think could have happened?
NP: I am certain that the fight would have gone to a 3rd round and I would have gave JZ one heck of a fight.

MC: One heck of a fight? Have you been training differently this time?
NP: No. For this fight, I didn’t train anything different but I just trained more intensely. At the same time I am always trying to find ways to improve my game.

MC: What was it like fighting in K-1’s American Debut show?
NP: The experience was amazing. I have never fought for an event that huge audience like this one so the energy from the crowd was wild.
MC: How was it like meeting your childhood hero, Sakuraba?
NP: It was a cool experience because this is a one in a lifetime opportunity. I know Sakuraba does not like to fly overseas for his fights. I was very honored to finally have met him before he retires from MMA.

MC: Tell us about that knock punch from JZ.
NP: There was no knock out punch that actually knocked me out, but there was a punch that hit me and Ref. Mario Yamazaki thought I was knocked out. I feel that I was totally conscious at what I was doing and I could have gone to the end of the fight.

MC: Are you anticipating on a rematch?
NP: I would love to have a rematch with JZ, but I’m sure that it will be very difficult because he’s a champion, and I am not even a K-1 contender. I am in no position to challenge him for a rematch.

MC: What have you been doing since the fight?
NP: I am just trying to rest up from all the training, and eating a lot of Popeyes chicken.

MC: Sounds fun. Any shout-outs today?
NP: I’d like to thank my trainers: Art James from Anaheim Boxing, Jason Bukich, and Adam Lynn for being in my corner. I’d like to thank good friend Kei Meada for having my back. I’d like to thank my sponsors: Budovideos.com, Kaizen athletics, Tap Out, and Knoxx MMA Gear. I’d also like to say much love to my boys from subfighter.com.

Prefight Interview

MickChanthaseth: So I understand that you two fights scheduled in a short amount of time, can you please tell us a little bit about that?
NamPhan: Yes, that is true. I will be facing Gesias "JZ" Calvancanti at the L.A. Coliseum on June 2nd for K1 Dynamite's American Debut show. Then finally, I will be fighting a TBA opponent in San Jose at the Strikeforce show on June 22nd.

MC: Do you feel like there is a lot of pressure on you to win?
NP: Well, there is always pressure for me to win, because I want to make my friends and family proud, and represent my people to the best of my abilities, but if you’re talking about my fight against JZ. I feel that he is the champ and there is more pressure on him to beat me because I am not a champion.

MC: He’s pretty big. Do you think this will be a Josh Thompson repeat?
NP: Well Mick, I really hope that this fight will not be a Josh Thompson repeat. I really feel that I am prepared to fight anyone and my style matches well against JZ.

MC: What style are you talking about, and what do you know of your opponent?
The style that I’m talking about is that I always come to the fight in good shape. My striking ability is pretty decent, and I think my grappling up to par. What I know about JZ is that he has very good Jiu Jitsu game, he throws a lot of hooks and he is very very strong for our weight class.

MC: Since the tragic incident of your coach, are you training differently?
NP: Well, this is not the first time that I have been without a coach, but I will miss him dearly. I am not doing anything different for any of my fights, I will use the skills and knowledge that coach has taught me and I will use it to train myself with the help of my teammates.

MC: Are there any shout outs you want to say right now?
NP: Thanks very much Mick. First, I would like to say Rest In Peace Coach Jeremy Williams; You will be very much missed. Also to the Williams family, thank you for always showing support and please stay strong. Thank you to Budovideos.com, Kaizen Clothing, Tapout, and Knoxx MMA Gear. Thank you to all the fans for your support.
