- NAM PHAN SILENCES CRITICS AT SENGOKU 7
Thursday, March 26, 2009 - by Mick Hammond - MMAWeekly.com

Prior to his win on the March 20 Sengoku show, there had been questions if California standout
Nam Phan could win on the big stage.
Losses in two Strikeforce events – to Josh Thomson and Billy Evangelista
–sandwiched a defeat at the hands of Gesias “JZ” Calvancante in the short-lived K-1 Hero’s brand kept
Phan from making the breakout he seemed destined to achieve.
Still, he refused to let the losses get the best of
him and made the decision to move down to the featherweight division, leading to his impressive first-round knockout victory
of former Shooto champ Hideki Kadowaki last Friday.
“I’m feeling great and I’m stoked,”
said an elated Phan. “I feel like I trained really well and for this fight I was the most calm, focused and ready than
in any other fight.”
Surprisingly the fight turned out to be a slugfest, with Phan landing the more precise
strikes, eventually dropping Kadowaki just after the three-minute mark.
“That was my plan,” he stated.
“Just try to get in and out, and knock him out.”
After disappointments in the lightweight division,
Phan now feels that the move down to 143 pounds was the right decision to make.
“I feel this is the weight
class for me,” he stated. “I won’t be fighting at 155 (anymore); I’ll be staying in the featherweight
division.
“I feel faster, the gas is better and I don’t feel like guys can overwhelm me as much as
they did at 155.”
As Phan puts it, now that he’s at featherweight, the opposition is going to be hard
pressed to get past him.
“In general I feel (I can hang) with anybody,” he commented. “Even not
within the tournament, I feel like at 143 I can give anyone a run for their money.”
As part of Sengoku’s
featherweight tournament, he could be very busy this upcoming year should he remain victorious.
“Right now,
the next round is May 2, and if I advance I’ll fight again in August,” he said. “They haven’t named
my opponent yet, so I’ll just wait until they call me then I’ll start training hard and try to show the people
what I’ve got.”
Hoping to have finally silenced his critics with his recent performance, Phan can now
focus on making his title aspirations come true in the coming year.
“I’d like to say thank you to my
sponsors: Toe 2 Toe, BudoVideos.com and Rev Gear,” he concluded. “I want to say thanks to my family, all the students
from the MaDu Academy and Little Saigon, California. I want to give a shout out to all my old teammates and teachers from
Subfighter, my beautiful girlfriend and MMAWeekly.
“To all the fans, keep looking for me and I’m going
to do my best in May.”

Abu Dhabi Combat Club interviews Nam Phan

The Sengoku featherweight tournament is the next MMA broadcast on HDNet. One of the
competitors if former lightweight Nam Phan. In the archives are updates with Nam throughout his career in Strikeforce,
K-1 Hero’s, and King of the Cage.
KM: How do you feel about being in the Sengoku tournament?
NP: Very happy. I’m very proud to be in the Sengoku tournament.
KM: Isn’t this the lightest
you have ever fought before?
NP: Yes, lightest I’ve ever fought. It’s not 145; it is 55 kg
or 143. I’m fluctuating around 145-148 right now.
KM: How confident do you feel at this new
weight?
NP: I should do well.
KM: Was size what led to your defeats against Thomson
or Evangelista?
NP: Not against JZ but Thomson was stronger than me and made me more tired.
KM:
So you plan on staying at featherweight?
NP: I got calls to go fight at 155 but I don’t want to do it
anymore. Before I fought a lot and didn’t want to cut so much weight. Nobody knew what 145 was. I have
my own academy now and I think I can afford to fight at 145 now.
KM: How do you feel about fighting in
Japan?
NP: I’m excited. I think it is every fighter’s dream to go to Japan. It is what
I always wanted to do.
KM: What do you think of your opponent Hideki Kadowaki?
NP: It is
cool because he is one of my heroes. Now that I have matured in jiu-jitsu and my boxing is getting better this is a great
fight for me.
KM: Your last fight was against Billy Evangelista in Strikeforce…
NP:
I won that night. They booed him in his hometown. What were they looking at?
KM: Tell us about your
academy.
NP: It is the Nam Phan MMA Academy located in Garden Grove in Orange County. Address is
12122 Brookhurst, Garden Grove, CA. More information at www.iamnam.com.
KM: Is all your training there?
NP: Here as much as possible and my boxing coach is at The Boxing Gym. Bao Quach came down to help me train and Caol
Uno came over to visit to help me train. I got some brown belts and some other black belts helped me train.
KM:
Anything else you want to get across to the fans?
NP: To those that have supported me thank you. Thank
you to my sponsors Toe-to-Toe, Budo Videos, everyone from the Nam Phan academy, all my friends and family, and I love you
to my girlfriend Thao Ha.

Sports Illustrated Play
by Play scores Phan over Evangellista
Billy Evangelista (155 lbs.) vs. Nam Phan (154 lbs.)
http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/209755
Round 1: The lightweights open by clinching against the fence, and Evangelista follows with
a takedown. Phan is stacked against the chain link and taking right hands to the face. Evangelista has the early edge as he
grounds and pounds from the guard. Two good right hands from Evangelista and Phan isn't going anywhere. Armbar from the
guard misses for Phan as Evangelista tries to punch as he passes. Phan is taking heavy shots now. The opening round is all
Evangelista and he closes out the period by landing a series of punches to the face. 10-9 Evangelista Round 2: They come out
striking and Phan connects on shots that forces Evangelista backwards. Nice knee to the body by Phan. Evangelista takes a
shot but Phan sprawls and stands. Nice right-hand counter by Phan. Evangelista quickly changes levels and gets to Phan's
legs, but the undersized 155er does an excellent job of maintaining his balance and standing. Evangelista persists and puts
Phan on his back. Evangelista's bleach-blonde hair has a giant red patch as blood poors from a cut on the right side of
his head. 10-9 Phan Round 3: Phan comes out slugging and Evangelista responds by wrestling him. Phan does a nice job of switching
Evangelista into the fence, where he's working knees to the midsection. They separate and Phan against uses the overhand
right -- his favorite punch of the fight. Phan is scoring now with punches and knees to the body. He's taken control of
this fight. Phan continues to make takedowns tough to come by. If he'd done this in the first, the bout would be his without
question. But it's tight and a takedown by Evangelista at the two-minute mark has ended Phan's rally for now. Referee
Herb Dean stands the fighters with a minute remaining. Two left hooks by Phan connect to Evangelista's jaw. They clinch
in the last 10 seconds. Another overhand right by Phan comes at the horn. 10-9 Phan Judges' cage-side scorecard: 29-28
